NIV Application Commentary – New Testament (20 volumes)

Price: $599.99

Also available: the 22-volume Old Testament product and individual volumes.

Most Bible commentaries take us on a one-way trip from our world to the world of the Bible. But they leave us there, assuming that we can somehow make the return journey on our own. They focus on the original meaning of the passage but don’t discuss its contemporary application. The information they offer is valuable—but the job is only half done! The NIV Application Commentary Series helps bring both halves of the interpretive task together. This unique, award-winning series shows readers how to bring an ancient message into our present-day context. It explains not only what the Bible meant but also how it speaks powerfully today.

I have found that i like structured commentaries. These are structured! Each passage includes the niv translation this is then followed by the commentary notes which are broken down under three headings:
    Original meaning
    Bridging contexts
    Contemporary significance.

The original meaning provides some context to how those who originally heard the text would have understood it. I have found this to be on a par with the tyndale commentaries.

Commentary sets are frequently criticized because of the variation in their strength. I have found this to be particularly true with this set. The contemporary significance gives examples of how it could be relevant today But In a few volumes in particular i have really not found the examples to be relevant or helpful and am clearly not on the same wavelength as the author.

The bridging contexts is interesting and where i find the most differences between the authors. In some volumes, this is very similar to the contemporary significance so there is a bit of duplication. However, in those volumes where i have found the contemporay significance to be particularly irrelevant, the authors seem to have found a away of introducing something fresh into the bridging context section.

Without exception though, whenever i read this commentary set i always start thinking about the passage in new and unexpected ways.

I wouldnt want this to be my only or principle commentary set, for me the wbc (or similar) is a must have. But this is an ideal set for me to supplement my wbc and having used it for a number of years, its not a set i would want to be without. Since having it, i have given away my hard copy set of tyndale commentaries.
