While studying, for one of my assignments, I had access to a library with a good selection of commentaries and I was able to spend quality time comparing them. I was impressed by the wbc set but couldnt justify the cost of the hard copies. I kept my eyes out for the cd set but fortunately Accordance had the entire set at a very affordable price and I was able to get them. Since then I have kept my set up to date with all the latest issues.
Since buying a few volumes in other sets such as pillar and nicot and more recently nivac, I have come to realise that I like structure in my commentaries. Wbc formats their commentaries with a translation, followed by notes on the original text. There is then a section which discusses the form, struct and setting of the text. Finally there are two sections with comments and an explanation. This means that it is easy to locate what information I am looking for without having to wade through unstructured text such as the nicot commentaries which I find heavy going. Nivac also structure their material.
I accept that within each series there are going to be strong and weaker editions but wbc have proved themselves to be my go to and are the one series I would not want to be without. I have supplemented it with jps and nivac. Nivac is good to get me thinking about the text in a different way so is ideal for personal use but I still need the wbc set for getting to grips with the text. Some volumes are long in the tooth and the set is missing a number of important volumes such as acts and 1 Corinthians but as a set, I have found them invaluable.
