Works of Epictetus (Enchiridion, Four Discourses) (English translation)
Epictetus was a Greek Stoic philosopher (AD 55-135). No writings of Epictetus himself are really known. His teachings, however, were transcribed and compiled by his pupil Arrian (the main work being The Discourses). Eight discourses were compiled in Arrian’s Discourses of Epictetus. Of the eight discourses, four have been preserved in their entirety along with fragments of the other four. The books did not have a formal title in ancient times.
The Discourses were first printed (in Greek) in 1535. The first English translation did not appear until 1758 with the appearance of Elizabeth Carter’s translation.
This module contains English translations of the following works (translated by Elizabeth Carter):
- Enchiridion –The Enchiridion, or Handbook of Epictetus, often shortened to simply “The Handbook,” is a short manual of Stoic ethical advice compiled by Arrian.
- Discourse One, Two, Three & Four – Four of the “talks” that have been preserved of the original eight discourses recorded by Arrian.
This module is formatted to run in parallel with the tagged Greek text (EPICT-T) and is included in the purchase of that module.

11/5/15 Update: The 3.0 update adds Discourse Two and Discourse Three.
11/3/16 Update: The 4.0 update adds Discourse Four.
